Grape Production

Grapevines require a site with full sun. Southeastern, south and southwestern slopes provide the best sun exposure. A loam, sandy loam or clay loam with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 is ideal. Avoid heavy clay soils, very sandy soils or low poorly drained sites. In addition, avoid low lying areas that are prone to late spring and early fall frost damage. Many varieties are very susceptible to 2,4-D-related herbicides; avoid planting in close proximity to areas where these herbicides are used (road right-of-ways, lawns and small grain fields). Grapevines take three years to come into production and are a very labor intensive crop (cultivation, pruning, spraying, irrigation and picking). Grapevines require a trellis system and may require irrigation in some areas.  Three common mistakes that new growers make are: not controlling weeds before and after planting, not providing enough water for establishment and not providing a trellis system in the first year.  A properly trained mature grapevine can produce five to twenty pounds of fruit; however, weather hazards, herbicides, birds or other animals can significantly reduce production potential. Please note: some of these sites may list grape cultivars that are not suitable for this region.  For South Dakota Climate information including freeze prediction maps go to http://climate.sdstate.edu/w_info/frost/frost.shtm
